Why do people do yoga?

People come to yoga for many differing reasons; some to increase their flexibility /mobility, find strength and improve their posture; others come for stress release in a hectic lifestyle, whilst others seek a general feeling of wellbeing, a deeper sense of self and a more peaceful life.

What kinds of people come to yoga classes?

People come to yoga from all areas of life; men and women; builders, students, lawyers, doctors, housewives, business people; and from all age groups; from teenage years through to retirement.

How many people are in the average class?

Class sizes range from 6 to 16.

What is the average class like?

We usually begin with some breathing followed by simple warm-up exercises then some asana (traditional postures) perhaps some breath kriya (cleansing practice) and relaxation to finish.

What should I wear?

Track pants, leggings or shorts and a fitted T-shirt or vest is fine. There is also a lot of bespoke yoga clothing on the market. Bring something long sleeved and a shawl/blanket for relaxation.

Do you have to book for a yoga class?

No. You can come along to try any of the classes. Come 15 minutes early to meet the teacher and settle in.

Do I have to bring my own mat?

There are always a few mats on loan and the Barn in Chagford is a fully equipped studio. We do recommend that you purchase your own mat and blocks as soon as possible. Both are available from the teacher.

Do you have changing facilities?

There is a bathroom or toilets at all facilities and a shower at the Barefoot Barn, Chagford.

Where can I park?

The Barefoot Barn, Chagford: Please park in the car park in the village (turn left after the square)
 
Throwleigh House: Please park outside the studio just beyond the main house.
 
Sandford Parish Hall: Please park outside the hall where there is a large car park.
 
Totnes Natural Health Centre: Please park in the car park on St Katherines Way (follow the road round to the right after the centre)

Can I eat before a yoga class?

When it comes to food and digestion each individual is different and needs to find out what works for them. As a general rule we suggest leaving 3 hours after a main meal and 1 hour after a light snack, and that you don't eat anything heavy for at least 30 minutes after a class.

I'm a beginner. Where do I start?

Come to one of the weekly classes or a workshop for beginners. We recommend you come 15 minutes early to meet the teacher before the class.
